Huehuetenango, is at the foot of the Cuchumatanes, the highest non-volcanic mountain range in Central America. Of the three non-volcanic regions in Guatemala, Huehuetenango is the highest and driest under cultivation, making it one of the best regions for coffee production. The currents of hot air that sweep up from Mexico’s Tehuantepec plain cross paths with cool air descending from the Cuchumatanes Mountains which protects the plants from frost, allowing the coffee to be cultivated at a higher altitude of up to 2,000 meters.
